Forthcoming solo exhibition Fall 2013

Bismuth (alloys), porcelain, glass, mirror, 2012.

Bismuth is an archival element, that under specific, synthetic conditions crystalizes into a distinct hopper shaped crystal form. This crystalline structure of multicolored lattice of cubes within cubes is utilized to simulate the Tesseract, a 4th Dimensional cube. Imagine the Tesseract is to the cube as the cube is to the square. In our thoughts, as well as dreams, we construct a reality within countless imperceivable dimensions, and the realm of the Tesseract is the first that evades our five senses. As artwork is meant to herald a great movement in the viewer into unknown lands of experience, these works are manifestations of the great mythic beacons of ineffable transmissions: Immortal Gods plucked form our literary tradition, all linked to the bridge that connects humans to the imperceivable truths beyond the body.

Installation view, solo exhibition, Jan/Feb 2010, Ever Gold Gallery. Mixed Media

Artist Statement

To know the wonder that lies drifting on the horizon: an island of glass in an ocean of ineffability. We sail those seas with open eyes and look out over fathoms leached with absence and mire until the destination appears. Production is a wake and our path lays tremors into the earth, appropriate shapes and sounds ensue until we can wake form the dream of dreams into the premonitions we realize while basking under luminous night skies.

Chris Ritson was raised in Hawaii, on the island of Oahu. It was in this particular island environment that the subtle influences of nature became the cornerstone of his intellectual pursuits and philosophical inquiries. While studying the sciences at the University of Hawaii and working on a shrimp hatchery, his interests shifted from biotechnology to the arts in order to explore how we make meaning in the context of our natural world. He later came to California where he completed his degree at SFAI in New Genres and lived for some time. His work has been featured across the USA as well as internationally in Taiwan, Korea, Australia and Europe. In 2011. Chris Ritson was selected as an Artist in Residence at the Headland Center For the Arts. He is 26, and now lives and works in

New York City.

The work of Chris Ritson serves to create dialogue with the environment and imagine new roles and modes of interacting with nature. Through this task, he elicits a different sort of art production that places value on natural systems and mankind’s ability to integrate positively with them. He creates works which speak to our cultural anxieties and relationships with nature, analyzing the labyrinth of myths and prerogatives specific to a psychology of the self. Drawing his materials from the natural detritus of his immediate surroundings, Chris Ritson aims to reconfigure the most elemental substances into objects and phenomena that elicit unique and temporal wonder.
